MONEY AND POLITICS
We did it to ourselves. We created this government of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich, bound and determined to drive the middle class from the face of the earth. We did it through our own laziness and through our failure to pay attention to politics outside of the dog and pony show put on by the major political parties every two years in and attempt to make us believe that we still have a democratic process in this Country. And when that semiannual dog and pony show arrives, we cast our votes for the same reasons we choose our orange juice and our breakfast cereal. We watch their ads on TV, buy the candidate that looks and sounds the best, and then spend the next two years wondering why the government that promised the moon is now serving up big portions of green cheese.
The importance of money in shaping our political system has produced one undeniable fact. The candidate who spends the most money on TV advertising is the candidate who eventually wins the election. For months prior to the election, we are bombarded with ads; and they come from everywhere. Some come from the candidates themselves. Others come from the political party the candidate represents. The majority of them come from outside organizations we’ve never heard of: “Concerned Citizens for a Better America”, “Americans United to Oppose Everything”, or “Veterans for Government Reform”. (I made these names up, but you get the idea.) The more patriotic the name, the farther to the right they lean. Look them up on the internet, and you’ll find a post office box address; if you can find anything at all. Once the election ends, they’ll quickly disappear. Negative ads tend to be the most effective: “Congressman Buttkiss eats babies for breakfast. Tell Congressman Buttkiss to stop eating babies for breakfast. Call 555-555-1212 and let him know that you don’t support eating babies for breakfast.”
And what do we get when the election’s over? Prom queens. Popularity trumping substance. Over 90% of the people elected to Congress are millionaires. Over 50% are lawyers. In college they might have taken one class in U.S. History, and they avoided Economics like the plague. They know nothing about where we’ve been as a country. What were our successes? What were our mistakes? What the hell is Economics anyway? They haven’t a clue. They do, however, know one thing. The main goal of any politician is to get reelected; and to get reelected, you will need to get more money from the people who got you there in the first place. To hell with your constituents! Please your donors. And your donors have plenty of lobbyists around to tell you what to do.
So who really rules this country? Not the politicians you see on the news, but the invisible billionaire donors and multinational corporations who pull their strings.
THIS ENDS NOW!
